One of the more prospectish guys in the ABL this season has to be right-handed reliever Cameron McVey, who’s signed on with the Oilers this season after being drafted by the Giants in the 22nd round this spring.

Cam McVey hails from suburban Los Angeles, Glendora to be exact — which is not far from San Dimas, whose high school football rules — and stayed in the area by enrolling in Biola. There he nailed down the job as the team’s closer and was one of two players drafted out of their NAIA program this past season. In addition to his 14 collegiate saves, he led Biola in ERA (2.53), batting average against (.181) and issued 39 strikeouts in 32.o IP.

He’s continued to be effective this season with the Oilers. Although he’s pitched just 9 innings so far, he’s racked up 9 strikeouts, and has held batters to a pathetic .097 average against. His ERA stands at an even 2.00

McVey is a power pitcher all the way. He is a big guy, an athletic specimen, who can squeeze some mustard out of his heater. His fastball is his best pitch and he relies on plus velocity (93 mph) and a bit of a late tailing action to get the outs. He complements this with a curveball that settles in about 85 and breaks from noon to 6 o’clock. He deals out of a funky 3/4 slot with a big slingshot delivery which is a little bit deceptive; if he signs with the Giants they might be working with him to develop an adequate third pitch.

Word on the street is that McVey will sign. On the other hand, if he was a senior I’m sure he would be drafted higher than the 22nd round, so he might not be too pressured into inking a deal before this August’s draft signing deadline. Only time will tell, but in the mean time, we Alaskans are lucky to have this talented young man displaying his skills for our enjoyment.
