Ryan Dull, right-handed pitcher formerly of the 2011 Mat-Su Miners, has put the Midwest League on lockdown to start the 2013 minor league season. Dull has logged a 1.56 ERA over 17.1 innings of relief. He’s struck out 26 of the batters he’s faced while walking a paltry two. Opposing batters are hitting a pathetic [...]

Four ABLers made MLB debut in 2012
By my count, there were four players with Alaska Baseball League experience who made their Major League debut during the 2012 season. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, a 2007 AIA Fire player and a guy that’s been on the prospect radar for a while, earned a spot in the Mets’ lineup out of spring training in 2012. He [...]
Full Story »1992 Miner Geoff Blum hits the booth
Long-time MLB star Geoff Blum, a member of the 1992 Mat-Su Miners of the Alaska Baseball League, has permanently left the batter’s box for a new career in the press box. Blum announced his retirement in January of this year; he was released by the Diamondbacks during the 2012 season and went unsigned for the [...]
Full Story »Bill Cullen Scouting Video
I really wanted to highlight Cullen’s speed in this video, because I think that he has excellent footspeed which might have gone unnoticed by folks who just look at the SB column of the stat sheet. I split and counted the frames in this video to get as accurate time to 1B as my video camera’s framerate would allow (it agreed with my stopwatch, just so you know).
Full Story »08 Miner Jensen tearing up the AFL
Former Mat-Su Miner Kyle Jensen (2008) is entering a pivotal off-season in his minor league career, and has been given a chance to prove himself in the highly-touted Arizona Fall League. So far, he’s made the best of that opportunity and has established himself as the league’s stand-out hitter through the first few weeks. Jensen [...]
Full Story »2012 MLB Playoff picture, ABL-style
As I write this, the 2012 MLB playoffs are moments away from opening, with Atlanta hosting St. Louis for the National League Wildcard one-game playoff match-up. With no margin for error Kris Medlen — the former Goldpanner who has become Atlanta’s unexpected ace in the second half of the season — will get the ball [...]
Full Story »Aug ’12 DB Update and Noteworthy Transactions
It’s kind of a weird feeling, not having a bunch of unwritten game-notes looming over my head, so I’ve got to address the elephant in the room and update the Pro Alumni Database while there’s still some pro ball to be played. This is one of those bigger projects that become very time consuming, so [...]
Full Story »49HB’s 2012 Top Pro Prospects Ranking
While most of the baseball prospect blogs churn out their Top Prospect rankings in the spring, I am bucking the trend and doing it in the fall. Why? Pretty simple: I spend most of my spring and summer preparing for and covering the ABL season and this stuff simply falls to the wayside. But that’s [...]
Full Story »ABL Draft/NDFA Signings for 2012
With the 2012 Alaska League season in the rear view mirror, and the MLB playoff races building momentum, I’m doing some catching up on the professional players with ABL stints in their backgrounds. In order to do that, I have to update my list of who the guys are who are still out there in [...]
Full Story »7-21-12 Scout Showcase Game Notes
The Saturday portion of the Scout’s Showcase was supposed to feature all six teams, in three games, in one ballpark in one day. I went to this event in 2010 and loved it. Unfortunately, the weather had other things in store. Two games were cancelled outright. What I did see was a portion of a [...]
Full Story »Bill Cullen Player Profile
Let’s keep the player profile rotation going and put the spotlight on one of the most electrifying players of the Mat-Su Miners, and the entire ABL, this season: VCU sophomore outfielder Bill Cullen.

The North squad, dressed in gold, secured victory over the blue South in the 2012 Alaska Baseball League All-Star Game. The match-up concluded with a final score of 6-4. The Pilots’ Tyler Spoon broke the ice for the South, putting them on the board by hitting a single, stealing second and third, then taking home [...]
Full Story »7-18-12 Oilers at Miners Game Report and Photos
Now that summer ball is almost over, summer has finally come to Alaska! We got a little break from the dreary weather for a sun-soaked, low 70′s, perfect day for baseball. It had been a while, a little too long in fact, since I’d seen a Miners game, so you know where I was headed [...]
Full Story »7-1-12 Oilers at Miners Game Report and Photos
Hermon Brothers Field this past Sunday featured a matinee match-up between the visiting Peninsula Oilers and the home-team Mat-Su Miners. The two teams have been rivals over the past few years, battling for first place in 2010 and 2011. This season, the Oilers have proven to be worthy of the title “team to beat” while [...]
