Rust has served primarily as a catcher in his ABL tenure but has played around the field as well. In 2011 he went to the NBC World Series with the Oilers, where he had a homer and 5 RBIs in 7 games. A peek at Oilers’ 2013 Roster

The 2013 Peninsula Oilers’ roster is coming together, and the team has slowly been releasing names to the local media. James Clark, the team’s GM, has been using his Oilers Corner column in the Peninsula Clarion to feed his fans players’ names and summary background, one or two guys at a time. For the quickest [...]

Jake Alvarez Scouting Video

Jake Alvarez came up to Alaska with the Oilers in 2012 and struggled a bit at the plate before going home with an injury. While his stat sheet up here isn’t pretty, I think he’s a player to keep an eye on for two reasons. First, because he’s signed to come back up with the Oilers in 2013, so for those of you fans who didn’t pick him up on your radar last year…

Aug ’12 DB Update and Noteworthy Transactions

It’s kind of a weird feeling, not having a bunch of unwritten game-notes looming over my head, so I’ve got to address the elephant in the room and update the Pro Alumni Database while there’s still some pro ball to be played. This is one of those bigger projects that become very time consuming, so [...]

J.D. Drew has retired (I guess).

In a way that seems very appropriate for a player (in)famous for his nonchalant approach to the game, J.D. Drew has apparently retired from playing professional baseball. The 36-year-old right fielder — a member of the 1995 Peninsula Oilers of the Alaska Baseball League — quietly finished out his contract with the Red Sox, walked [...]

49HB’s 2012 Top Pro Prospects Ranking

While most of the baseball prospect blogs churn out their Top Prospect rankings in the spring, I am bucking the trend and doing it in the fall. Why? Pretty simple: I spend most of my spring and summer preparing for and covering the ABL season and this stuff simply falls to the wayside. But that’s [...]

2012 NBCWS wraps up, sans Alaska

For the first time in who knows how long, the National Baseball Congress World Series has come to its conclusion, and the Alaska Baseball League was not represented. The Santa Barbara Foresters — who defeated the Oilers in the championship round of the 2011 series — took their second consecutive NBCWS championship. The ABL teams [...]

ABL Draft/NDFA Signings for 2012

With the 2012 Alaska League season in the rear view mirror, and the MLB playoff races building momentum, I’m doing some catching up on the professional players with ABL stints in their backgrounds. In order to do that, I have to update my list of who the guys are who are still out there in [...]

7-25-12 Odds and Ends

League Recap: At this point the Glacier Pilots look like they’re firmly in command, but it’s not settled yet. There are a lot of games left to play and it’s not out of the question for an epic collapse to occur. However, the Miners, Goldpanners and Chinooks have all been mathematically eliminated, leaving the Bucs [...]

North Takes 2012 All-Star Game

The North squad, dressed in gold, secured victory over the blue South in the 2012 Alaska Baseball League All-Star Game. The match-up concluded with a final score of 6-4. 7-18-12 Oilers at Miners Game Report and Photos

Now that summer ball is almost over, summer has finally come to Alaska! We got a little break from the dreary weather for a sun-soaked, low 70′s, perfect day for baseball. It had been a while, a little too long in fact, since I’d seen a Miners game, so you know where I was headed [...]

7-11-12 Oilers at Chinooks Game Report and Photos

For the nine-millionth time this season, I saw the Oilers face off against the Chinooks. Obviously I am enjoying the fact that the Chinooks offer free general admission to their ball games this season, and it just so happens that the Oilers seem to be in town every time it is convenient for me to [...]
